SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Dr. Lundy Savage of Champaign, who passed away on February 15, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Rev. Dr. Lundy Washington Savage was born on September 21, 1940, in Memphis, Tennessee; he attended Judson College in Elgin, where he received a B.A. degree in Christian Religion; while at Judson, he served as treasurer of the senior class and president of the Religion and Philosophy Club; during this time, he also served the Lilydale and Shiloh Baptist churches of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, After graduation he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he worked with the National and Southern Baptist Churches; he married Carolyn Marie Scott of Robbins in 1966; in 1968 he was called to pastor the Secondary Baptist Church in Dixon, where he served faithfully for 2 1/2 years; Pastor Savage was called to Mount Olive Baptist Church in 1971 and in 2008, Pastor Savage reached a milestone of 50 years of preaching the gospel; and

WHEREAS, On February 13, 2011, Pastor Savage reached 40 years of pastoral service at Mount Olive Baptist Church; he held positions in many civic and Christian organizations, including: serving as president of the Ministerial Alliance and NAACP, as a member of the Better Housing Committee, as chairman of the board of the Mount Olive Manor Housing Department, and serving as chairman of the Title VII Committee of Champaign Schools and the Religious Television Broadcasters; and

WHEREAS, He served as president of Wood River District Congress for four years, president of the Baptist General State Convention of Illinois for six years, and Third Vice President of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. for 10 years; in addition, Pastor Savage was the proud organizer and moderator of the Fellowship District Association; and

WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents, Freddie Savage Sr. and Ruby Dixon; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Savage leaves behind to cherish his memory his beautiful and loving wife of 44 years, Carolyn Savage; his children, Scott Savage and Christie Dixon; his siblings, Freddie Savage Jr. (Yvonne), Alfonso Savage (Rosia), Willie Savage (Brenda), Lawrence Savage (Joann), Marqurite Toliver (Carl), Virgil Savage, LeRoy Savage, Ronald Savage, and Kenneth Savage; his granddaughters, Aliya Savage, Chanel Dixon, and Keira Savage; his nieces and nephews; his godson, Jason Napper; his loving congregation; and his friends all over the world; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family, friends, and congregation, the passing of Reverend Dr. Lundy Savage; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Reverend Dr. Lundy Savage as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
