| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Philip H. |
| 4 | | Corboy; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy grew up in West Rogers Park and |
| 6 | | attended St. Margaret Mary Grade School in Rogers Park and St. |
| 7 | | George's High School in Evanston; he subsequently attended 4 |
| 8 | | colleges and graduated first in his class from the Loyola |
| 9 | | University Chicago School of Law in 1949; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy served with pride as a member of the |
| 11 | | United States Army; and |
| 12 | | WHEREAS, After working for a short time with the City of |
| 13 | | Chicago, Philip Corboy began working for James Dooley, a |
| 14 | | prominent personal injury lawyer who eventually became an |
| 15 | | Illinois Supreme Court justice; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy began his own legal practice in |
| 17 | | 1952; he practiced personal injury trial law for more than 50 |
| 18 | | years and was the co-founder of the Chicago firm Corboy & |
| 19 | | Demetrio; he continued practicing law into his early 80s; and |
| 20 | | WHEREAS, From 1974 through 2000, the law firm of Corboy & |
|

| 1 | | Demetrio secured 387 settlements in excess of $1 million; his |
| 2 | | firm worked on the Tylenol poisoning case, the crashes of |
| 3 | | commercial jetliners, and the 1995 collision between a train |
| 4 | | and school bus that killed 7 students in Fox River Grove; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was listed by the National Law |
| 6 | | Journal as one of the top 100 most influential lawyers in the |
| 7 | | country since beginning its survey in 1985 and was one of only |
| 8 | | 13 lawyers nationwide to hold that distinction; he was listed |
| 9 | | in "The Best Lawyers in America" since its inception in 1987; |
| 10 | | he was also the recipient of the 1996 Big Shoulders |
| 11 | | Humanitarian Award for their commitment to a fund for |
| 12 | | inner-city Catholic schools; and |
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was the first personal injury lawyer |
| 14 | | to be elected president of the Chicago Bar Association in 1972; |
| 15 | | he served as president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers |
| 16 | | Association; he was a former chairman of the Section of |
| 17 | | Litigation of the American Bar Association and a former chair |
| 18 | | of the American Bar Association's Special Committee on Medical |
| 19 | | Professional Liability; he also served as general counsel for |
| 20 | | the Illinois Democratic Party and served on the boards of |
| 21 | | directors of numerous business, legal, and charitable groups |
| 22 | | and as a member of numerous medical and legal task forces; and
|
| 23 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was well known throughout his |
|

| 1 | | community for his charity work; he led the Catholic Archdiocese |
| 2 | | 'Big Shoulders' fund for years; buildings were also dedicated |
| 3 | | to him at the Loyola University School of Law and a room was |
| 4 | | named for him at the Chicago Bar Association; he was also |
| 5 | | involved in the Catholic Church Extension Society and was a |
| 6 | | confidante to Cardinal Joseph Bernardin; and |
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy was preceded in death by his |
| 8 | | children, Bobby and Joan Corboy; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Philip Corboy is survived by his wife, Mary |
| 10 | | Dempsey; his sons, Philip H. "Flip" Corboy Jr., John R. Corboy, |
| 11 | | and Thomas M. Corboy; his 8 grandchildren; and his brother; |
| 12 | | therefore, be it
|
| 13 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 14 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 15 | | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of |
| 16 | | Philip H. Corboy; and be it further
|
| 17 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 18 | | presented to the family of Philip Corboy as an expression of |
| 19 | | our sympathy.
