HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate  Nucor Steel in 
4Kankakee on receiving the Star Voluntary Protection Program 
5Award by the United States Department of Labor's Occupational 
6Safety and Health Administration; and
  
 
7    WHEREAS, Nucor Steel is the largest producer of steel in 
8the United States and the largest recycler in North America; 
9Nucor produces a range of steel products including bars, beams, 
10sheet, plate, steel joists and joist girders, steel deck, 
11fabricated concrete reinforcing steel, cold finished steel, 
12steel fasteners, and metal building systems; and
  
 
13    WHEREAS, Nucor Steel has long championed the American 
14manufacturing sector and its workers; they value their 
15teammates and have a no layoff policy, even during times of 
16prolonged economic recession; and
  
 
17    WHEREAS, Nucor Steel in Kankakee provides hundreds of 
18high-paying jobs and a substantial tax base for the community; 
19and

  
 
20    WHEREAS, The Voluntary Protection Program is designed to 
21promote effective worksite-based safety and health; in the

1Voluntary Protection Program, management, employees, and 
2OSHA's establish cooperative relationships at workplaces that 
3have implemented a comprehensive safety and health management 
4system; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Nicor Steel Kankakee's approval into the 
6Voluntary Protection Program is OSHA's official recognition of 
7the outstanding efforts of the Nucor Steel management and 
8teammates who  have achieved exemplary occupational safety and 
9health; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Star Voluntary Protection Program recognizes 
11Nucor Steel Kankakee's outstanding efforts to reduce the number 
12of occupational safety and health hazards at its Kankakee mill, 
13and the development, implementation, and continuous 
14improvement of its safety and health management system; and
  
 
15    WHEREAS, Nicor Steel Kankakee strives to be an industry 
16leader and hopes that their site evolves into a model of 
17excellence and influences practices industry-wide; therefore, 
18be it
  
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
20NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
21we congratulate Nucor Steel Kankakee on receiving the United 
22States Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health

1Administration award and wish the company continued success in 
2the future; and be it further
  
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
