| 5 | | WHEREAS, Alice Carter was born in Pearl, Mississippi; she |
| 6 | | moved to Chicago's West Side in 1950; and

| 7 | | WHEREAS, Alice Carter loved cooking soul food since she was |
| 8 | | a child growing up in the Deep South of Mississippi; in 1961, |
| 9 | | she brought her "down-home cooking" to Chicago when she landed |
| 10 | | a job at a local West Side neighborhood eatery; in 1972, she |
| 11 | | opened her first restaurant on 5638 West Chicago Avenue; in |
| 12 | | 1983, she opened Alice's Soul Food at Madison and Parkside in |
| 13 | | Chicago; in 1988, she moved back to the Chicago Avenue spot, |
| 14 | | remaining there until she relocated to Division and Pine in |
| 15 | | 2004; the restaurant once again returned to its Chicago Avenue |
| 16 | | location in early 2010; and

| 17 | | WHEREAS, Alice Carter was well regarded by her many |
| 18 | | customers for her attention to customer service and her warm |
| 19 | | and welcoming demeanor; and
|
| 20 | | WHEREAS, In addition to running her restaurant, Alice |
| 21 | | Carter also worked for the Chicago Transit Authority beginning |
