HOUSE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, Northeastern Illinois University's in-residence 
3dance company and center, Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance 
4Theater, is celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2011; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, The Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater is a 
6not-for-profit corporation chartered to share the rich 
7traditions of dance, music, and culture of Spain with all our 
8communities and to be a center for encouraging new artistic 
9creativity from artists and educators; and
  
 
10    WHEREAS, The Ensemble Espanol is hailed as the "Center for 
11Spanish Dance in America" and is recognized as the leader in 
12Hispanic dance and music, uniting all of our communities via 
13their mission of art, education, and culture; and
  
 
14    WHEREAS, The Ensemble Espanol has been spreading the art 
15and culture of Spain in the City of Chicago, the State of 
16Illinois, and around the world via education, scholarships, 
17performances, and tours for more than three decades; and
  
 
18    WHEREAS, The company's founder and artistic director, Dame 
19Libby Komaiko, is the first American artist in history to be 
20awarded Spain's highest honor to foreign nationals with the 
21Lazo de Dama de la Orden de Isabel, la Catolica, by Juan Carlos

1I, King of Spain, for her work in spreading the cultural values 
2of Spain via music and dance throughout the United States; and
  
 
3    WHEREAS, The company's extraordinary repertoire, tours, 
4classes, workshops, seminars, residencies, and festivals, 
5shared by millions of audience members and students for the 
6past three decades, exemplify their mission as the premiere 
7foundation of the international center for Spanish dance and 
8music at Northeastern Illinois University; therefore, be it
  
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
10NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
11we designate June 16, 2011 as Ensemble Espanol Day in the State 
12of Illinois; and be it further
  
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
14presented to Dame Libby Komaiko at the American Spanish Dance 
15and Music Festival as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
