HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the patrons, owners, musicians, artisans, and thespians of the Palette, Masque and Lyre Theater in Antioch as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Theater; and

WHEREAS, The Palette, Masque and Lyre Theater was established in the early 1960s by people interested in producing plays, art works, and musicals; early members that are still active include Dee Baum, Aileen and Paul Biel, Art Doty, Hank Apostal, Shirley Jensen, and Betty and Ken Smouse; and

WHEREAS, The group originally rented an empty theater building on Main Street in Antioch; the Crystal Palace had been used as a playhouse, burlesque hall, and movie theater; early productions by P.M. & L. Theater were put on for local PTAs, churches, and other organizations with proceeds going for building upkeep and operating expenses; and

WHEREAS, In 1983, the group was given the chance to purchase the building, and through donated money, time, labor, and skill the P.M. & L. Theater had a home of its own; and

WHEREAS, In 2000, an estate gift allowed the P.M. & L. Theater to remodel the building and add an addition; and

WHEREAS, A typical season at the Palette, Masque and Lyre Theater includes six shows representing three areas of theatre: drama, mysteries, and musicals; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the men and women of the Palette, Masque and Lyre Theater as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of bringing the arts to Antioch; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Palette, Masque and Lyre Theater Board of Directors as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
