HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of  
3
Representatives are pleased to honor Thokozani Khupe, the 
4
Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe; and
  
 
5
    WHEREAS, Deputy Prime Minister Khupe is a founding member 
6
and Vice-President of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), 
7
one of the main political parties in the Republic of Zimbabwe; 
8
she has served as Deputy Prime Minister since February 11, 2009 
9
and is a senior member of the Zimbabwean Parliament for the 
10
Makokoba constituency in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe; and
  
 
11
    WHEREAS, Deputy Prime Minister Khupe has been a stalwart 
12
advocate on issues that concern the challenges faced by women 
13
in Zimbabwe and throughout the world; and
  
 
14
    WHEREAS, Deputy Prime Minister Khupe served in the Zimbabwe 
15
Amalgamated Railway Union (ZARU) in 1987; in 1991, she was 
16
elected to serve as Secretary of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade 
17
Unions' Women's Advisory Council and as a General Council 
18
member; and

    WHEREAS, Deputy Prime Minister Khupe will be the guest of 
20
honor and key note speaker at the Zimbabwe Trade & Cultural 
21
Expo's Annual Gala in Chicago, which brings together elite

businessmen, investors, and event dignitaries to discuss 
2
business and investment opportunities for the nation of 
3
Zimbabwe; and

    WHEREAS, Deputy Prime Minister Khupe serves as a model of 
5
hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the 
6
State of Illinois, the Republic of Zimbabwe, and the world at 
7
large; therefore, be it
  
 
8
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
9
NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
10
honor Thokozani Khupe, the Deputy Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, 
11
for her work in women's issues and welcome her to the State of 
12
Illinois; and be it further
  
 
13
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
14
presented to Deputy Prime Minister Khupe as a symbol of our 
15
esteem and respect.
