| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION

| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of
Royal Walter Lauing of Naperville, who | ||||||
| 4 | passed away on June 28, 2007; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Royal Walter Lauing was born on November 18, 1921 | ||||||
| 6 | in Blunt, South Dakota; his parents were Walter and Victoria | ||||||
| 7 | Lauing; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Royal Walter Lauing and his family moved to | ||||||
| 9 | Belmont when he was five years old; there he attended Puffer | ||||||
| 10 | Elementary, then graduated from Downers North High School in | ||||||
| 11 | 1941; he enlisted in the United States Army immediately after | ||||||
| 12 | graduation, serving in General George Patton's 6th Armored | ||||||
| 13 | Division, 3rd Army, 25th Engineers Battalion in Europe during | ||||||
| 14 | the Second World War; his "Super Sixers" unit saw combat in The | ||||||
| 15 | Battle of the Bulge and participated in the liberation of | ||||||
| 16 | Buchenwald; after the war he made three pilgrimages to the | ||||||
| 17 | Patton Museum in the Mohave Desert in California and rode to | ||||||
| 18 | Washington, D.C. on The Journey to Honor trip to witness the | ||||||
| 19 | dedication of the WWII Memorial; and
| ||||||
| 20 | WHEREAS, After the Second World War, Royal Walter Lauing | ||||||
| 21 | worked as a mechanic for his uncle at the Burgess Motor Garage | ||||||
| 22 | on Washington Street in downtown Naperville, where he met his | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | future wife Marcianna Miller, who would come in to fuel her | ||||||
| 2 | car; they were married in 1946 and built a home that Royal | ||||||
| 3 | lived in for 61 years and where he raised his children; he also | ||||||
| 4 | worked for his father and learned the bricklayer trade; he | ||||||
| 5 | started his own sub-contractor business, Royal Lauing Masonry, | ||||||
| 6 | in the late 1950's; he worked as a builder for 60 years as one | ||||||
| 7 | of the longest standing members of the Bricklayers and Allied | ||||||
| 8 | Crafts Workers Local 74; his last major project before | ||||||
| 9 | retirement was to complete the 16 stone piers of Grand | ||||||
| 10 | Pavillion of the Naperville Riverwalk and the keystone piers to | ||||||
| 11 | the west branch promenade; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Royal Walter Lauing was an active member of VFW | ||||||
| 13 | Post 3879; he volunteered monthly at Hines Veteran's Hospital | ||||||
| 14 | in the spinal cord ward; he was a volunteer WWII living history | ||||||
| 15 | speaker with Naperville School District 203's HURRAH (Happy | ||||||
| 16 | Upbeat Recycled Retirees Actively Helping) Program for 18 | ||||||
| 17 | years; he had taken basic PC computer training at Naperville | ||||||
| 18 | North High School in 2005, where he proved that "old dogs can | ||||||
| 19 | learn new tricks"; he was also a member of the Naperville | ||||||
| 20 | American Legion and took great joy in riding in Memorial Day | ||||||
| 21 | parades in antique vehicles; he was also a member of the | ||||||
| 22 | Naperville Heritage Society; and
| ||||||
| 23 | WHEREAS, Royal Walter Lauing is survived by his children, | ||||||
| 24 | Daniel and Carolyn (Mel) Finzer; his granddaughters, Nicole and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Deirdre Finzer; his brother, Donald Lauing; and his sisters, | ||||||
| 2 | Shirley Phelps and Barbara Kleb; and | ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Royal Walter Lauing will be remembered by all who | ||||||
| 4 | knew and loved him as an honest, generous businessman with a | ||||||
| 5 | strong work ethic; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 6 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 7 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
| ||||||
| 8 | his family and friends, the passing of Royal Walter Lauing; and | ||||||
| 9 | be it further
| ||||||
| 10 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 11 | presented to the family of Royal Walter Lauing as an expression | ||||||
| 12 | of
our sympathy.
