SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION


 
2
    WHEREAS, It is the great honor of the Illinois General 
3
Assembly to pay tribute to those who devote their lives to the 
4
protection of the general public; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, Calhoun County Chief Deputy Sheriff Brian K. 
6
Gibbons was born on November 19, 1972 in Alton to Dennis 
7
Gibbons and Debbie (Bailey) Gibbons; he earned his associate's 
8
degree in business from Lewis and Clark Community College in 
9
1993 and his bachelor's degree in law enforcement and justice 
10
administration in 1999; he became a certified police officer in 
11
2002, when he graduated from Southwestern Police Academy; and

 
12
    WHEREAS, Brian Gibbons served the citizens of Calhoun 
13
County as Chief Deputy Sheriff of the Calhoun County Sheriff's 
14
Office, a position he served in with pride and distinction; on 
15
the fateful date of July 9, 2006, while on duty in full 
16
uniform, Brian Gibbons' marked Calhoun County squad car was 
17
struck by a drunk driver; Deputy Gibbons passed away two days 
18
later on July 11, 2006; and

 
19
    WHEREAS, Brian Gibbons also served his country with pride 
20
as a member of the United States Army, another measure of his 
21
respect and love for his fellow man; and

    WHEREAS, Deputy Brian Gibbons' loyalty and dedication to 
2
the citizens of Calhoun County as an officer of the law, and 
3
his willingness to serve the people even at the expense of his 
4
own life, is deserving of the highest respect of the Illinois 
5
General Assembly and the citizens of the State of Illinois; 
6
therefore, be it

 
7
    RESOLVED, BY THE  SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL 
8
ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES 
9
CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the portion of Illinois 
10
Route 100 residing in Calhoun County as the Brian Gibbons 
11
Memorial Highway in honor of this brave officer; and be it 
12
further

 
13
    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation 
14
is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with 
15
State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs 
16
giving notice of the name of the Brian Gibbons Memorial 
17
Highway; and be it further
 
18
    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be 
19
delivered to the Secretary of the Illinois Department of 
20
Transportation and the Calhoun County Board.
