HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, April 13-19, 2008 is National Library Week; and

 
3
    WHEREAS, The staff of the Helen Matthes Library in 
4
Effingham is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the library 
5
on April 16, 2008 with a birthday party; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, The library is also preparing to reach a milestone 
7
with close to 100,000 items circulated; and

 
8
    WHEREAS, On July 31, 1883, the Effingham Ladies Library 
9
Association was incorporated by Mrs. Nellie Bliss White; the 
10
current library was built in 1956 after making its home in the 
11
White Building and then in the City Hall; and

 
12
    WHEREAS, The library is named after the mother of former 
13
mayor of Effingham, Paul Eiche; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, The library houses over 70,000 items, has eighteen 
15
public access computers and four card catalog computers, and 
16
holds free computer classes eight times a year in a computer 
17
lab donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; 
18
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

congratulate the staff and patrons of the Helen Matthes Library 
3
on this momentous occasion; and be it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
5
presented to Amanda Standerfer, Director of the Helen Matthes 
6
Library, as a symbol of our respect.
