HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives wish to congratulate the staff of the Elmhurst 
4
Art Museum on the occasion of the museum's 10th anniversary in 
5
its award-winning building; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, The Elmhurst Art Museum was created in 1980 by the 
7
Elmhurst Fine Arts and Civic Center Foundation; by 1983, the 
8
museum was granted the use of two rooms in the Elmhurst 
9
Community Center and for the next sixteen years exhibited 
10
exclusively Illinois artists; in 1990, the museum became aware 
11
of an opportunity to purchase the McCormick House, one of only 
12
three homes in the U.S. designed and built by Ludwig Mies van 
13
der Rohe; the house was purchased in 1991; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, The current site of the Elmhurst Art Museum opened 
15
in September 1997; since its opening, the building has won the 
16
Chicago AIA Regional Architecture Award, and was nominated for 
17
a National Distinguished Building Award for Architectural 
18
Excellence and named the "Best Suburban Art Museum in Chicago" 
19
by Chicago Magazine; the nationally recognized building is a 
20
center of  important community advocacy through its programs and 
21
exhibitions, and by its close working relationships with 
22
residents of DuPage County, the State of Illinois, and the 
23
Midwest region; the building has also become an important site

for art exhibitions, providing wide exposure for many artists 
2
in the State; and

    WHEREAS, The Elmhurst Art Museum's mission is to provide 
4
the people of Elmhurst and its surrounding communities with a 
5
center for the visual arts and a welcoming atmosphere where art 
6
can be viewed, studied, created, and appreciated in an 
7
architecturally significant facility; the museum also places a 
8
great importance on the enrichment of the lives of its visitors 
9
by broadening their knowledge, increasing sensitivity to the 
10
fine arts, and by sparking the development of their own 
11
creative talents; therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
13
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
14
congratulate the staff of the Elmhurst Art Museum on the 
15
occasion of the museum's 10th anniversary in its award-winning 
16
building and wish them continued success in the future; and be 
17
it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19
presented to a representative of the Elmhurst Art Museum as a 
20
symbol of our respect and esteem.
