SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Shawn D. Davis on June 4, 2006; and

WHEREAS, Shawn was born on July 17, 1972, in Chicago Heights to Delois Davis and Marcus Peace; he gave his life to Christ at an early age at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist church and later in life, he found an inner peace; and

WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Big Shawn", he began his education at Lexington Elementary; he went on to attend Proviso East High School, where he attained his high school diploma and cultivated his love for football; and

WHEREAS, His athleticism has been nationally recognized and is accompanied by All State honors; he set records as a receiver that are yet to be broken; his records and athletic ability made him one of the best tight ends at Proviso East High school; he received numerous athletic scholarship offers to join the rosters of several Big 10 universities; and

WHEREAS, He grew up across the street from the Lightford household and was one of the nicest and most gentle persons anyone could ever encounter in life; and

WHEREAS, He was a "Big Brother" and mentor to many young men in the neighborhood, including Senator Kimberly A. Lightford's brother, Melvin "Nankey", and was always ready and willing to have a brotherly conversation with any of them when the need arose; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis had an entrepreneurial spirit and enjoyed traveling, sports, and being surrounded by his closest friends; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was a wonderful man who could be counted on or called upon to assist in any way; he was one of God's true soldiers, and so many people were touched by his life; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Shawn D. Davis has been deeply felt by many, especially his mother, Delois Phillips; his stepfather, Willie Phillips; his sister, Latoya Phillips; his niece, Uneke Phillips; his nephew, Dwayne Crowder Jr.; his grandparents, Katie Davis and Loretta Weston; his special friend, Ashina Kelly; his uncles and aunts, Ann Bailey (John), Vivian, Deborah, Diane, Loretta, Ronald, and Donald; and his many other family and friends; he was preceded in death by his father, Marcus Peace; his grandparents, Willie Davis and Dirk Weston; and his uncle, Michael A. Davis; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Shawn D. Davis, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
