SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Dr. Irving Favus of Peoria on January 16, 2006; and

WHEREAS, He was born in Chicago on June 24,1909, the oldest son of Abe and Fannie Favus; he graduated from Peoria High School in 1928, where he was on the cross country team and was news editor of the school paper, Opinion; he married his wife, Anna, on November 3, 1965; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Favus attended the University of Illinois at Champaign for pre-med and medical school; while in school, he worked as a sports editor of the Daily Illini, the university newspaper; after interning at Cook County Hospital, he practiced with his Uncle Nathan (his mother's brother) in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, In January 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves at Fort Sheridan; he then transferred to duty at Fort Robinson, Arkansas; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Favus spent five years and one month on active duty; he served 15 months with General George Patton, earning five Battle Stars and a Bronze medal as commanding officer of the 110th Medical Battalion; his unit took care of 30,000 wounded, mostly German soldiers, American GIs, and French civilians; in 1945, Life magazine published an article on Dr. Favus' dedication beyond the call of duty; and

WHEREAS, Following discharge, Dr. Favus moved to Peoria to practice with his brother, Leonard; his son, Mark, reviewing records of the partnership, concluded they had treated over 20% of the Peoria population, which numbered over 100,000; and

WHEREAS, He was active on the board of B'nai B'rith, a member of Agudas Achim Synagogue, and was a contributor to Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Bradley University; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Favus left private practice in 1984 to accept an offer from Methodist Medical Center of Illinois and held many executive positions in both the hospital and the foundation; until his retirement three years ago at the ripe age of 93, he was the senior consultant to the CEO; he and his wife founded the Favus Foundation for Hospice Care at Methodist; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Favus was a founding member of Peoria's Chief Club and enjoyed attending their games; to unwind after a busy day, he liked to watch the Bulls, Major League games (White Sox fan), read, play a round of golf with his brothers, and go to Seanie's boat (the Par-A-Dice); and

WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Irving Favus has been deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, especially his devoted wife, Anna; his sons, Mark and Don (Sheri); his daughter, Donna (Tim) Patrick; his brother, Robert; his grandson, Sean; his granddaughters, Jessica, Tanya, and Erin; and the thousands of patients he has served over the years; he was preceded in death by three younger brothers, Charles, Joseph, and Leonard; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Dr. Irving Favus and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest condolences.
