| SENATE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, Diabetes is one our nation's greatest health |
| 3 |
| risks, affecting approximately 18.2 million people in the |
| 4 |
| United States, roughly 6.2% of the population; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The 2 main forms of diabetes are Type 1 and Type 2 |
| 6 |
| diabetes; Type 1 diabetes results from the body's failure to |
| 7 |
| produce insulin, and Type 2 diabetes results from insulin |
| 8 |
| resistance combined with relative insulin deficiency; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Children are affected by Type 1 diabetes, and the |
| 10 |
| number of children affected by diabetes is growing; and |
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, The 94th General Assembly has passed House Bill |
| 12 |
| 1581, which creates the Diabetes Research Check-off Fund and |
| 13 |
| provides that, from the Fund, the Department of Human Services |
| 14 |
| must make grants to public or private entities for diabetes |
| 15 |
| research; and |
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funds |
| 17 |
| research on diabetes that affects children; and |
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, The American Diabetes Association supports basic |
| 19 |
| and clinical research for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes aimed |
| 20 |
| at preventing, treating, and curing diabetes; and |
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Illinoisans rank second, behind Mississippi, in |
| 22 |
| meeting target levels of scores on A1c hemoglobin tests, making |
| 23 |
| it the second worst state in the nation at controlling |
| 24 |
| diabetes; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL |
| 26 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Department |
| 27 |
| of Human Services to disburse the moneys in the Diabetes |
| 28 |
| Research Check-off Fund as grants for the research of diabetes |
