| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
| 3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Susan Doxsie Smith of |
| 4 |
| Decatur on Thursday, March 18, 2004; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was born on March 24, 1949, in Decatur |
| 6 |
| to Lou and Beryl (Lytle) Doxsie; she graduated from MacArthur |
| 7 |
| High School in Decatur in 1967; she married Jay P. Smith on |
| 8 |
| June 24, 1972, in Decatur; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith had been the executive director of the |
| 10 |
| Decatur Area Arts Council since 1993 and was an avid supporter |
| 11 |
| of the arts; during her tenure as director, she spearheaded |
| 12 |
| moving the arts council offices from Rock Springs to downtown |
| 13 |
| Decatur in 1996; recently, she arranged for businesses to |
| 14 |
| sponsor park benches creatively painted by local artists, |
| 15 |
| established weekly Knit Nights at arts council offices, and was |
| 16 |
| the driving force behind the new Community Arts Center, which |
| 17 |
| is set to open by June 1, 2004; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a wonderful friend, who was willing |
| 19 |
| to give of herself at every opportunity; she had a passion for |
| 20 |
| arts in the schools and a knack for making the arts accessible |
| 21 |
| to regular people; and
|
| 22 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith was a member of Central Christian |
| 23 |
| Church; and
|
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Susan Doxsie Smith has been deeply |
| 25 |
| felt by many, especially her husband, Jay; her children, Samuel |
| 26 |
| J. Smith and wife Suzanne, Andy Smith, and Sarah Smith; and her |
| 27 |
| brothers, John Doxsie and wife Julie and Tom Doxsie and wife |
| 28 |
| Lori; therefore, be it
