SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Half a million Illinoisans depend on the
3Affordable Care Act's health insurance marketplace to provide
4healthcare for their families; and
 
5    WHEREAS, The affordable insurance options available on the
6Get Covered Illinois marketplace have offered peace of mind to
7small business owners, self-employed entrepreneurs,
8independent contractors, individuals balancing work and
9education, and people working part-time jobs; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Federal subsidies created through the Inflation
11Reduction Act of 2022 kept health insurance accessible, even
12as household budgets were strained by many other rising costs;
13and
 
14    WHEREAS, As a key deadline to extend these cost-saving
15subsidies approaches, President Donald Trump stated: "I don't
16want to extend them for two years. I'd rather not extend them
17at all."; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Despite bipartisan support for these subsidies,
19President Trump and Republican leaders allowed them to expire
20on January 1, 2026; and

1    WHEREAS, Customers on Get Covered Illinois and other
2insurance marketplaces are now facing massive increases in
3their insurance costs, with many seeing premiums more than
4double and deductibles rising by as much as $10,000 per
5person; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The Keiser Family Foundation calculates that
7Illinois will be among the states most grievously impacted by
8Trump's actions, taking an average of $927 per year out of
9people's pockets; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Rural and downstate communities are even more
11negatively impacted, costing residents of Darrin LaHood's 16th
12Congressional District more than $1,400, costing residents of
13Mary Miller's 15th Congressional District more than $1,500,
14and costing residents of Mike Bost's 12th District more than
15$2,000 every year; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Up to 140,000 Illinoisans will no longer be able
17to afford their health insurance because of Donald Trump's
18actions, on top of the hundreds of thousands who will lose
19access to Medicaid because of Trump's cuts; and
 
20    WHEREAS, The Trump tax bill will give more than $100
21billion in tax cuts to the ultra-wealthy and corporations, and
22working families have repeatedly been forced to pay the bill

1with cuts to care, cuts to programs, and higher insurance
2costs; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we call on Congress to
5end the Trump healthcare affordability crisis by immediately
6reinstating the 2022 healthcare subsidies.
