AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1496
2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 1496 by replacing 
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
 
4    "Section 1. Findings. The General Assembly finds that:
5    (a) The historic site of New Salem has fallen into severe 
6disrepair, which poses safety hazards and threatens its 
7cultural and historic significance.
8    (b) Immediate renovations are necessary to preserve the 
9structural integrity of the site and to ensure public 
10accessibility and safety. 
11    (c) The State recognizes the importance of New Salem as a 
12historic landmark and its role in education, tourism, and 
13local economic development.
14    (d) Due to the urgent need for repairs, this Act is an 
15emergency measure necessary for the immediate preservation of 
16New Salem.
 
17    Section 5. The sum of $19,000,000, or so much of that sum

1as may be necessary, is appropriated from the Build Illinois 
2Bond Fund to the Department of Natural Resources for capital 
3improvements at the New Salem State Historic Site, including 
4reconstruction of the Grist Mill at the site, repair and 
5maintenance of all structures and perimeter fencing within the 
6site, illumination of all outdoor statues and flags at the 
7site, and repair of the wagon wheel structure at the entrance 
8of the site.
 
9    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect July 1, 
102025.".
