| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to recognize the life and service of Jon | ||||||
| 4 | Charles Sapp, who was killed in action defending his country | ||||||
| 5 | during the Vietnam War; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp was born to Charles and Mary (Frandin) | ||||||
| 7 | Sapp on July 31, 1943; he graduated from Ottawa High School and | ||||||
| 8 | studied history at college in Nebraska with plans on becoming | ||||||
| 9 | a history teacher; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp followed in his father's footsteps and | ||||||
| 11 | joined the U.S. Army; he took his basic combat training at Fort | ||||||
| 12 | Leonard Wood, Missouri and advanced infantry training at Fort | ||||||
| 13 | Ord, California; he was then sent to Non-Commissioned Officers | ||||||
| 14 | School at Fort Benning, Georgia; he graduated, was promoted to | ||||||
| 15 | staff sergeant, and was made a squad leader; and | ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp received orders sending him to Vietnam | ||||||
| 17 | on January 10, 1970; he joined the 9th Infantry Division of | ||||||
| 18 | World War II fame; his regiment was the 60th Infantry | ||||||
| 19 | Regiment, which has been formed in 1861 during the Civil War; | ||||||
| 20 | he was part of the 2nd Battalion, Company A, Air Assault; and | ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp arrived in the Mekong Delta south of | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Saigon, Vietnam on January 22, 1970; as a squad leader, he led | ||||||
| 2 | his men on patrols to protect the perimeter and keep a check on | ||||||
| 3 | the enemy; and | ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp's base camp was attacked by the North | ||||||
| 5 | Vietnamese in April of 1970; his hut was destroyed, and he lost | ||||||
| 6 | most of his personal effects; and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp was killed in action on April 19, 1970 as | ||||||
| 8 | his unit took part in a firefight in retaliation for the attack | ||||||
| 9 | on his base camp; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Jon Sapp was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, | ||||||
| 11 | the Silver Star, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart, the National | ||||||
| 12 | Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam | ||||||
| 13 | Campaign Medal; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 14 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 15 | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
| 16 | we recognize the life and service of Jon Charles Sapp, who was | ||||||
| 17 | killed in action defending his country during the Vietnam War; | ||||||
| 18 | and be it further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to the family of Jon Sapp as an expression of our | ||||||
| 21 | deepest sympathy.
