1    AN ACT concerning State government.
  
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
 
3represented in the General Assembly:
  


 
 
4    Section 5. The Law Enforcement and Fire Fighting Medal of 
5Honor Act is amended  by changing Section 2001 as follows:
 



6    (20 ILCS 3985/2001)  (from Ch. 127, par. 3852-1)



7    Sec. 2001. 
There is created the Law Enforcement Medal of 
8Honor
Committee, referred to in this Article as the Committee.  
9The Committee
shall consist of the Director of the Illinois 
10State Police, who shall serve as chair, the
Superintendent of 
11the Chicago Police Department, the Executive Director of
the 
12Illinois Law Enforcement Training
Standards Board,
and the 
13following persons appointed by the Governor:  a sheriff, a 
14chief of
police from other than Chicago, a representative of a 
15statewide law
enforcement officer organization and a retired 
16Illinois law enforcement
officer.  Of the appointed members, 
17the sheriff and police chief shall each
serve a 2-year term and 
18the organization representative and retired officer
shall each 
19serve a one-year term.   The Governor shall appoint initial

20members within 3 months of the effective date of this Act. 
21Notwithstanding any provision in this
Section to the contrary, 
22the term of office of each
Committee member is
abolished on 
23October 1, 2023.
The terms of the Committee members
appointed

1on or after the effective date of this amendatory
Act of the 
2103rd General Assembly shall be as follows: one of

the members 
3shall be appointed for a term of one year,
one member shall be 
4appointed for a term of 2 years, and 2 members  shall be

5appointed for terms of 3 years. Thereafter, the Committee 
6members
shall hold office for 4 years. The Governor shall 
7appoint these members within 3 months of the effective date of 
8this amendatory
Act of the 103rd General Assembly. 

9    Members of the Committee shall serve without compensation 
10but shall be
reimbursed for actual expenses incurred in the 
11performance of their duties
from funds appropriated to the 
12Office of the Governor for such purpose. The Illinois State 
13Police shall provide administrative support to the Committee.
