| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Martha Alice Nelson-Pugh, who passed away |
| 4 | | on February 17, 2020; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh was born in Pace, Mississippi |
| 6 | | to Willie and Sophia Nelson on October 19, 1928; she moved with |
| 7 | | her family to Chicago in 1946 and married Willie James Pugh |
| 8 | | Sr.; and
|
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh's faith was an important part |
| 10 | | of her life; in her younger years, she was an active member of |
| 11 | | her community and was affectionately called "Momma" by many; |
| 12 | | "The Candy Lady" was her name to the children in the |
| 13 | | neighborhood, and she was lovingly known by friends as "Big |
| 14 | | Red"; she could always bring everyone together whether it was |
| 15 | | for a family meal or a game of Keno; and |
| 16 | | WHEREAS, After raising her children and helping raise her |
| 17 | | grandchildren, Martha Nelson-Pugh continued caring for others |
| 18 | | and added to her family; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh was preceded in death by her |
| 20 | | husband, Willie Sr.; her daughter, Betty Jean; her sons, Melvin |
| 21 | | and Arthur; her sisters, Mary Alice, Ruby Lee, and Catherine; |
|

| 1 | | her brothers, Charlie and Ely; her grandson, Raymond; and her |
| 2 | | parents; and

| 3 | | WHEREAS, Martha Nelson-Pugh is survived by her children, |
| 4 | | Loretta (Elmer) Taylor, Coy (Jackie) Pugh, Willie Jr. (Corliss) |
| 5 | | Pugh, Carl Pugh, Tonyja Thomas, Jermaine Pugh, Patrick Pugh, |
| 6 | | Kareema Pugh, and Coy (Angel) Pugh; her grandchildren, Richard |
| 7 | | Pugh, Elmer Jr.(Qeena) Taylor, LaShawn Burrell, |
| 8 | | Shulanda(Me'Jan) Sullivan, Chiquita Harris, Sohn Green, Nicole |
| 9 | | Pugh, Montisha Thomas, Courtney Pugh, Carl Miller, Kenneth |
| 10 | | Thomas, Jared Pugh, Keyarra Thomas, Anthony Thomas, Justice |
| 11 | | Pugh, Ahmariyah Pugh, and Alinani Pugh; 39 great-grandchildren |
| 12 | | and 12 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, |
| 13 | | nephews, family members, and friends; therefore, be it

| 14 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
| 15 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 16 | | Martha Alice Nelson-Pugh and extend our sincere condolences to |
| 17 | | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
| 18 | | further
|
| 19 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 20 | | presented to the family of Martha Nelson-Pugh as an expression |
| 21 | | of our deepest sympathy.
