| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Nancy L. Hughes, a dedicated | ||||||
| 4 | philanthropist and longtime resident of Lake Forest, who passed | ||||||
| 5 | away on on September 15, 2019; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Nancy Hughes was born in Chicago to Henry and | ||||||
| 7 | Naomi Ludwig on April 22, 1951; she was raised in Northbrook | ||||||
| 8 | and attended Glenbrook North High School, where she met fellow | ||||||
| 9 | student John Wilden Hughes Jr.; they married in 1970; their | ||||||
| 10 | lives were steeped in music, and they enjoyed rock concerts in | ||||||
| 11 | the 1960s and nights in Chicago blues and reggae clubs in the | ||||||
| 12 | 1970s and 1980s; the young couple worked a series of odd jobs, | ||||||
| 13 | briefly lived in Arizona, and settled in Glencoe in the 1970s | ||||||
| 14 | before moving to Los Angeles, where they lived from 1984 until | ||||||
| 15 | 1988; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Whether Nancy and her husband were living on the | ||||||
| 17 | North Shore or in the movie colonies of California, she created | ||||||
| 18 | homes that were a refuge against shifting Hollywood loyalties | ||||||
| 19 | and box-office receipts; she filled them with good food, lively | ||||||
| 20 | music, and fun card games; if asked, she offered down-to-earth | ||||||
| 21 | advice for guests of all ages; and
| ||||||
| 22 | WHEREAS, Nancy Hughes was her husband's inspiration and | ||||||

| |||||||
| 1 | most-trusted advisor; she endorsed her husband's career move | ||||||
| 2 | from advertising to screenwriting, and his films told stories | ||||||
| 3 | comprised of observations from their lives and shared | ||||||
| 4 | experiences in towns like Northbrook, Glencoe, and Northfield; | ||||||
| 5 | and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, After her husband's death, Nancy Hughes ensured | ||||||
| 7 | their legacy would be remembered; the John & Nancy Hughes | ||||||
| 8 | Theater at the Gorton Community Center, the John & Nancy Hughes | ||||||
| 9 | Clubhouse at the Deerpath Golf Course in Lake Forest, the | ||||||
| 10 | Hughes Auditorium at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research | ||||||
| 11 | Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, and the Hughes | ||||||
| 12 | Gateway at Forest Park Beach are symbols of her decades of | ||||||
| 13 | charitable contributions to the community; she generously | ||||||
| 14 | donated to Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, where the John & | ||||||
| 15 | Nancy Hughes Pavilion is located; her former home on | ||||||
| 16 | Westminster Avenue, where her family lived from 1988 until 2009 | ||||||
| 17 | and where her husband wrote Home Alone, was donated to | ||||||
| 18 | Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital in 2014; and
| ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Nancy Hughes will be remembered as an | ||||||
| 20 | enthusiastic, kind, and generous woman who deeply loved her | ||||||
| 21 | family and community; and
| ||||||
| 22 | WHEREAS, Nancy Hughes was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
| 23 | her sister, Janice; and her husband, John; and
| ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Nancy Hughes is survived by her sons, John III | ||||||
| 2 | (Ruta) Hughes and James (Tracy) Hughes; and her grandchildren, | ||||||
| 3 | Katelyn, Wil, Livia, and Henry; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||
| 5 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 6 | Nancy L. Hughes and extend our sincere condolences to her | ||||||
| 7 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | ||||||
| 8 | further
| ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 10 | presented to the family of Nancy Hughes as an expression of our | ||||||
| 11 | deepest sympathy.
