| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Sammie L. Garrett Parker of North |
| 4 | | Chicago, who passed away on August 28, 2019; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was born in Pontotoc, Mississippi to |
| 6 | | John and Freddie Garrett on September 2, 1930; she was a member |
| 7 | | of Mt. Nebo Methodist Church in Pontotoc, where she |
| 8 | | participated in the Children's Choir and was a Leader and |
| 9 | | Sunday School Teacher; she attended Mississippi Industrial |
| 10 | | College in Holly Springs, Mississippi and married Andrew |
| 11 | | Galloway; after his passing, she married John L. Parker; she |
| 12 | | moved to North Chicago in 1956; and
|
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was employed by the Downey Veteran |
| 14 | | Administration Hospital in Lake County; she retired in 1988; |
| 15 | | and |
| 16 | | WHEREAS, In retirement, Sammie Parker turned her interest |
| 17 | | to her community; she volunteered for Meals-On-Wheels and was |
| 18 | | an active member of the Lake County Community Choir, |
| 19 | | ministering in song to area nursing homes; she was known for |
| 20 | | showing compassion and personally meeting the needs of others |
| 21 | | by providing financial support, transportation, and shopping |
| 22 | | assistance; she was also a member of the Quarter Century Club |

| 1 | | and served as a Lake County election judge for many years; and |
| 2 | | WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was a member of Mt. Sinai |
| 3 | | Institutional Baptist Church, where she served for 63 years; |
| 4 | | she was involved with the Young Matrons, Ruth Circle, and the |
| 5 | | Vacation Bible School; she served as Children's Sunday School |
| 6 | | Teacher and was a member and vice president of the Mother's |
| 7 | | Ministry and president of the Senior Choir; she was also a |
| 8 | | member and treasurer of the Lake County Chapter of Church Women |
| 9 | | United; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Sammie Parker was preceded in death by her |
| 11 | | parents; her husbands, Andrew Galloway and John L. Parker; her |
| 12 | | son, Jon L. Parker Jr.; her brothers, Robert, Lee, Shelby, |
| 13 | | Otis, George, Myron, and John Garrett; her sisters, Clara |
| 14 | | Hillman, Idella Hollis, Mary Austin, and Frankie Stewart; her |
| 15 | | grandson, David E. Brewton; and her great-granddaughter, Ivy |
| 16 | | Marie Sanchez White; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Sammie Parker is survived by her daughters, Jo |
| 18 | | Anne (Ernest) Brewton and Myrtle (James) White; her |
| 19 | | daughter-in-law, Carolyn Parker; her brother-in-law, Charles |
| 20 | | (Verna) Parker; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; |
| 21 | | numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends; and her |
| 22 | | special nieces, Ernestine Dave, Vanise McGill, Ruby Williams, |
| 23 | | Jaqueline Garrett-Parsons, and Zen Owens; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL |
| 2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 3 | | Sammie L. Garrett Parker and extend our sincere condolences to |
| 4 | | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
| 5 | | further
|
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 7 | | presented to the family of Sammie Parker as an expression of |
| 8 | | our deepest sympathy.
