| 1 | SENATE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Karen Ard on October 19, 2018 at the age | ||||||
| 4 | of 79; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard (Eggers) was born on September 15, 1939; | ||||||
| 6 | and
| ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard was referred to as a Renaissance woman, | ||||||
| 8 | as she enjoyed playing the piano and the cello and joined the | ||||||
| 9 | local orchestra for its annual production of the Messiah; and | ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard volunteered at the Adler Planetarium, | ||||||
| 11 | where she built her own telescope and used it to help people | ||||||
| 12 | learn about the sky; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, In her 40s, Karen Ard returned to college and | ||||||
| 14 | earned a degree in geology, which involved her studying rock | ||||||
| 15 | samples from Wisconsin under a microscope to determine their | ||||||
| 16 | composition; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard was involved in community organizing in | ||||||
| 18 | Maywood, working to ensure integration, building relationships | ||||||
| 19 | with gang members through outreach at the Cicero Salvation | ||||||
| 20 | Army, and teaching members to enjoy reading; her success in | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | teaching students who hated reading led her to teach many | ||||||
| 2 | non-readers to relish in reading, sometimes in only a week; and | ||||||
| 3 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard loved conversing with people, getting to | ||||||
| 4 | know them, and discussing social justice, which brought her | ||||||
| 5 | great pleasure; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard taught second to sixth-grade science for | ||||||
| 7 | 12 years, engaging with the same students during their | ||||||
| 8 | elementary school years and getting to know them very well; | ||||||
| 9 | each year, she had a science fair and guided her students in | ||||||
| 10 | choosing and mastering a project to present to parents at the | ||||||
| 11 | fair; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard taught junior college courses in earth | ||||||
| 13 | science, educating her students on global warming since the | ||||||
| 14 | 1990s; and
| ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard's greatest passion was being a loving | ||||||
| 16 | mother and wife; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Karen Ard is survived by her husband, Tom; her | ||||||
| 18 | daughters, Sheri A. Ard and Denise E. Ard; and her brothers, | ||||||
| 19 | Thomas Eggers and Paul (Anne) Eggers; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 20 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL | ||||||

| 1 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 2 | Karen Ard and extend our sincere condolences to her family, | ||||||
| 3 | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| ||||||
| 4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 5 | presented to the family of Karen Ard as an expression of our | ||||||
| 6 | deepest sympathy.
