| 2 | | WHEREAS, The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution |
| 3 | | granted American women the right to vote, a right known as |
| 4 | | women's suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending |
| 5 | | almost a century of protest; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, In Illinois, women's suffrage movements began as |
| 7 | | early as the 1860s; in 1873, a statute was passed giving women |
| 8 | | the opportunity to run for any school office not created by the |
| 9 | | Illinois Constitution; women were given the right to vote for |
| 10 | | school officers in 1891; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, With the continued work of several organizations, |
| 12 | | including the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association, the |
| 13 | | Illinois Federation of Women's Clubs, and the Chicago Political |
| 14 | | Equality League, women in Illinois secured the right to vote; |
| 15 | | and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Governor Edward Dunne signed the suffrage bill |
| 17 | | into law on June 26, 1913, giving women the right to vote for |
| 18 | | President, as well as local officers; this action made Illinois |
| 19 | | the first state east of the Mississippi River to give women the |
| 20 | | right to vote for President; and
|
| 21 | | WHEREAS, On June 4, 1919, the U.S. Congress passed the |
