| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Reverend Marvin E. Wiley |
| 4 | | on 29 years as pastor of Rock of Ages Baptist Church in |
| 5 | | Maywood; and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Wiley is a native of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; he |
| 7 | | was baptized at the age of seven; he graduated from Pine Bluff |
| 8 | | High School in 1978; he attended Dallas Baptist College in |
| 9 | | Dallas, Texas; he graduated from the University of Arkansas at |
| 10 | | Pine Bluff; and
|
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Wiley was ordained at the Eighth Avenue |
| 12 | | Baptist Church in Pine Bluff in May 1981; while in Pine Bluff, |
| 13 | | he served as pastor at the Pilgrim Baptist Church from 1981 to |
| 14 | | 1988 and the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church from 1988 to 1991; |
| 15 | | he became the pastor of Rock of Ages Baptist Church in March |
| 16 | | 1991, the church's second pastor in its 69-year history; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Wiley led the Rock of Ages Baptist Church to |
| 18 | | spiritual, numerical, and financial growth, including the |
| 19 | | construction of the church's Worship Service Facility at 1309 |
| 20 | | Madison Street to accommodate the growth in membership; he also |
| 21 | | founded the nonprofit Vision of Restoration, Inc., which was |
| 22 | | founded to restore the broken lives of residents in Maywood and |
|

| 1 | | surrounding communities by providing educational and economic |
| 2 | | development, mental and social services, and career |
| 3 | | development and enhancement; he was also instrumental in the |
| 4 | | opening of the T.H. Wade Foundation Center, a four-level, |
| 5 | | multi-million dollar facility that opened in November 2004 and |
| 6 | | offers many additional resources for worship, training, |
| 7 | | education, and business; and
|
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Wiley has traveled across the country to lead |
| 9 | | services focused on leadership, stewardship, and evangelism; |
| 10 | | he also served on the executive committee of the corporate |
| 11 | | board of directors of the Sunday School Publishing Board of the |
| 12 | | National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.; in addition, he has |
| 13 | | served on numerous civic and community boards during the course |
| 14 | | of his ministry; and
|
| 15 | | WHEREAS, During the course of his nearly 40-year career, |
| 16 | | Rev. Wiley has earned a number of accolades; he was recognized |
| 17 | | in the 2006 inaugural edition of Who's Who in Black Chicago, a |
| 18 | | publication showcasing the achievements of influential African |
| 19 | | American leaders in the Chicago area; most notably, he was |
| 20 | | inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers of |
| 21 | | Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia on April 3, 2008; and
|
| 22 | | WHEREAS, Rev. Wiley is the father of Madilyn Ellise and |
| 23 | | Jarrett Ryan; he is the grandfather of Jarret Ryan Jr.; |

| 1 | | therefore, be it
|
| 2 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 3 | | HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 4 | | we congratulate Reverend Marvin E. Wiley on 29 years as pastor |
| 5 | | of Rock of Ages Baptist Church and wish him many more wonderful |
| 6 | | years; and be it further
|
| 7 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 8 | | presented to Rev. Wiley as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
