HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Chester Slaughter of Chicago, who passed away on December 23, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Chester Slaughter was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago and was a successful product of the Chicago Public School system; and

WHEREAS, Chester Slaughter went on to attend Tennessee State University (TSU), earning his undergraduate degrees in political science and history in 1965; inspired by the civil rights movement and determined to make a difference in the lives of African Americans, he furthered his education at Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, Chester Slaughter participated in the Howard Law Journal and received his Juris Doctorate in 1968; while attending law school, he met the love of his life, Ruth Willis; and

WHEREAS, Chester Slaughter's achievement as an outstanding defense attorney propelled him to become a trailblazer in the legal community and a vital cornerstone of four notable law firms; and

WHEREAS, Chester Slaughter's diverse career included working within the government and public sectors, where he served as a supervising Cook County State's Attorney, as General Counsel for the Maywood Park District, and as a hearing officer for the Cook County Metropolitan Water Reclamation District; he will forever be remembered for his remarkable 46-year career as a distinguished attorney, political advisor, community advocate, and mentor; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Chester Slaughter and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Chester Slaughter as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
