| 6 | | first week of session in 1818 and adjourned until statehood was |

| 8 | | WHEREAS, The second session of the First General Assembly |
| 9 | | convened in January 1819 after Illinois
was officially declared |
| 10 | | a state on December 3, 1818; and |
| 11 | | WHEREAS, The first piece of legislation of the Illinois |
| 12 | | General Assembly was on a
hand-written, one-page document, An |
| 13 | | Act Declaring What Laws are in Force in This State, which
made |
| 14 | | British Common Law the rule of the land until aspects were |
| 15 | | superseded by the General Assembly; and
|
| 16 | | WHEREAS, The 14 senators of the First Illinois General |
