| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
| 3 | learn of the death of Mary Marling, who passed away on October | ||||||
| 4 | 12, 2017 at the age of 80; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling was born in Detroit, Michigan to | ||||||
| 6 | Lewis and Virginia Tower on April 17, 1937; she graduated from | ||||||
| 7 | Grosse Pointe High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in | ||||||
| 8 | Economics from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts | ||||||
| 9 | in Russian Studies from New York University; she was deeply | ||||||
| 10 | committed to her family, her community, and the Unity Temple | ||||||
| 11 | Unitarian Universalist Congregation; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling was an avid sports fan cheering | ||||||
| 13 | loudest for the Detroit Tigers, University of Michigan | ||||||
| 14 | football, the Detroit Red Wings, and later, the Chicago Cubs; | ||||||
| 15 | she was deeply superstitious about sports and believed that | ||||||
| 16 | ironing during games brought victory to her beloved Tigers; and | ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling had an "I can make that" attitude and | ||||||
| 18 | tackled many craft projects such as quilting and knitting; she | ||||||
| 19 | later became an excellent bridge player and converted to online | ||||||
| 20 | matches in recent years; she was a true music lover and played | ||||||
| 21 | classical piano; and | ||||||

| 1 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling recently celebrated 38 years of | ||||||
| 2 | sobriety and was a firm believer in the power of Alcoholics | ||||||
| 3 | Anonymous; she supported many in joining "The Club" and wanted | ||||||
| 4 | to assure people that they were not alone; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling's final job was as the bookkeeper for | ||||||
| 6 | the local non-profit Ten Thousand Villages fair trade shop, | ||||||
| 7 | where she was able to combine her interest of orderly numbers | ||||||
| 8 | and doing good; and
| ||||||
| 9 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling's friends would describe her as an | ||||||
| 10 | optimist, curious and playful, and someone who lived life on | ||||||
| 11 | her own terms; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling was an extrovert who thrived when | ||||||
| 13 | surrounded by people; she also smiled and loved completely; and | ||||||
| 14 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling was preceded in death by her parents; | ||||||
| 15 | and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Mary Marling is survived by her daughters, | ||||||
| 17 | Jennifer Marling and Carrie Bankes; her grandchildren, Julia, | ||||||
| 18 | Abby, and Will Bankes, who knew her as "Bama"; her son-in-law, | ||||||
| 19 | Steve Bankes; her brother, John Tower (Susan); her sister, Sue | ||||||
| 20 | Conklin (Robert); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good | ||||||
| 21 | friends; therefore, be it

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 3 | Mary Marling, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, | ||||||
| 4 | friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
| ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 6 | presented to the family of Mary Marling as an expression of our | ||||||
| 7 | deepest sympathy.
