SENATE RESOLUTION

  
 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to 
3learn of the death of Mark Alan Miller, who passed away on 
4September 16, 2017; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Mark Miller was born in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to 
6Tim and Irene Miller on June 28, 1945; he was baptized at 
7Shiloh Baptist Church and graduated from North Chicago 
8Community High School; he attended Central State College in 
9Ohio and served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967 
10during the Vietnam War; and
  
 
11    WHEREAS, Mark Miller was employed at Johnson Motors and 
12Commonwealth Edison; on October 1, 1975, he  became the first 
13African American full-time firefighter for the City of North 
14Chicago; he obtained several licensures and certifications, 
15including Firefighter II, National Register Emergency Medical 
16Technician Paramedic, and Hazardous Materials Operations; he 
17received commendations for skill and dedication during his 
18tenure, including assisting in the rescue efforts of two 
19children from a structure fire; and
  
 
20    WHEREAS, Mark Miller served as union secretary; he helped 
21organize fund raisers and was involved in the Illinois Black 
22Firefighters Association and several community functions

1during his over 26 years with the city; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Mark Miller loved fishing, building, and racing HO 
3track cars; he also loved racing real cars; his pride and joy 
4was a 1994 black Pontiac Trans Am with silver stripes; and
  
 
5    WHEREAS, Mark Miller was preceded in death by his parents; 
6both paternal and maternal grandparents; one grandchild; two 
7nephews; one niece; and one brother-in-law; and
  
 
8    WHEREAS, Mark Miller is survived by his wife, Cleopatra; 
9his children, Marc, Michael, Michelle (James), and Lashana; 
10eight grandchildren; and his  siblings, Gloria (Vernon) Swift, 
11Broderick (Cora) Miller, Steven (Daphne) Miller, Collette 
12(Lawrence) Brown, and Valerie Melvin; therefore, be it
  
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL 
14ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of 
15Mark Alan Miller, and extend our sincere condolences to his 
16family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it 
17further
  
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19presented to  the family of  Mark Miller as an expression of our 
20deepest sympathy.
