| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
| 3 | | learn of the death of Lawrence Quentin "Larry" Smith of |
| 4 | | Deerfield, who passed away on July 15, 2017; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Lawrence Smith was born in East Orange, New Jersey |
| 6 | | on August 30, 1931; he served in the United States Air Force |
| 7 | | during the Korean War; he attended Fairleigh Dickinson |
| 8 | | University on the GI Bill, later transferring to the New Jersey |
| 9 | | Institute of Technology, where he received a degree in civil |
| 10 | | engineering; he married Josephine V. "Jo" Bergamo on January |
| 11 | | 25, 1958; and
|
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Lawrence Smith worked for Stimsonite in New Jersey |
| 13 | | for 39 years until he retired as product manager in 1996; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1974, Lawrence Smith and his family moved to |
| 15 | | Deerfield from Roseland, New Jersey and he quickly became |
| 16 | | immersed in the community; he sang in Holy Cross Parish's choir |
| 17 | | and ushered at Sunday Mass; he was a member of the Knights of |
| 18 | | Columbus in New Jersey and continued on with the Knights in |
| 19 | | Deerfield; he later became a member of the American Legion; he |
| 20 | | was awarded the Village of Deerfield's Human Relations Award in |
| 21 | | 2007; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Lawrence Smith volunteered for Meals on Wheels and |
| 2 | | advised high school students for the Grand Times Program; he |
| 3 | | served as President of the Council at the Patty Turner Senior |
| 4 | | Center, where he also maintained the Lending Closet; he |
| 5 | | organized the annual Pancake Breakfast on the 4th of July for |
| 6 | | many years; and
|
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Lawrence Smith is survived by his wife of 59 |
| 8 | | years, Josephine; his children, James (Eleanor Pagano) Smith, |
| 9 | | Karen (Mark) Ables, Susan (Stephen) Burlone, Lori (Dane) James, |
| 10 | | and Peter (Judith Cardiff) Smith; and his grandchildren, |
| 11 | | Madeline, Peter, Charles, and Michael Smith, Kimberly and |
| 12 | | Heather Ables, Amanda, Paige, and Austin Burlone, Parker and |
| 13 | | Trent James, and Meagan, Emily, and Vincent Smith; therefore, |
| 14 | | be it

| 15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL |
| 16 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
| 17 | | Lawrence Quentin "Larry" Smith, and extend our sincere |
| 18 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved |
| 19 | | him; and be it further
|
| 20 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 21 | | presented to the family of Lawrence Smith as an expression of |
| 22 | | our deepest sympathy.
