| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of John S. |
| 4 | | "Jack" Shales of Elgin, who passed away on January 26, 2018; |
| 5 | | and
|
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Jack Shales was born in Elgin on November 13, |
| 7 | | 1930; he graduated from Elgin High School in 1949; he served in |
| 8 | | the United States Marine Corp in Korea from 1951 until 1953; he |
| 9 | | married Marlene Kane, his high school sweetheart, in 1954; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Jack Shales began working at Illinois Hydraulic |
| 11 | | Construction Co. in 1954; after 27 years, he co-founded the |
| 12 | | construction company Seagren/Shales Inc.; in 2001, he was a |
| 13 | | founding partner of Shales McNutt Construction; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Jack Shales believed people are brought into the |
| 15 | | world to aid others; he volunteered for the United Way of Elgin |
| 16 | | for more than 60 years; he also served on the boards of the |
| 17 | | Salvation Army and the Gail Borden Public Library Foundation, |
| 18 | | and he emceed the Easter Seals telethons; and
|
| 19 | | WHEREAS, Jack Shales was devoted to Elgin and was viewed as |
| 20 | | an icon in the community; because of his good sense of humor, |
| 21 | | and his belief that "you always have time to help other |
|

| 1 | | people," he was often tasked with encouraging others to |
| 2 | | volunteer; in 2004, The United Way made him a lifetime director |
| 3 | | of the group and named the "Spirit of Community award for him; |
| 4 | | in 2013, the City of Elgin honored him with its "Extra Mile |
| 5 | | Hero" Award; in 2011, he and his wife were honored by the City |
| 6 | | of Elgin and received an Image Award for their community |
| 7 | | service, which that year included sponsoring the Community |
| 8 | | Thanksgiving Luncheon and posing as the king and queen of the |
| 9 | | library's Royal Feast to raise money for a teen center; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Jack Shales is survived by his wife, Marlene; his |
| 11 | | children, Michael (Trecia) Shales, Kristin (Doug) Durham, |
| 12 | | Heidi (Jeff) Baudry, and John (Shelly) Shales; his |
| 13 | | grandchildren, Anna (Frank) Machniak, Gwen Shales (Kyle |
| 14 | | Johnson), Leah (Dan) Roe, Jack F. Shales, Raven and Hope |
| 15 | | Shales, Kyle and Jesse (Sabrina) Durham, Zak and Alec Baudry, |
| 16 | | Sydney, Matthew, Ellen, and Jake Shales; and his |
| 17 | | great-grandchildren, Asher and Etta Johnson, Lillian and |
| 18 | | Timothy Machniak, and Baby Roe (due this summer); therefore, be |
| 19 | | it

| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
| 21 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 22 | | mourn the passing of John S. "Jack" Shales and extend our |
| 23 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
| 24 | | and loved him; and be it further
