| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Chicago Cubs' first | ||||||
| 4 | baseman Anthony Rizzo on being selected for the 2017 Roberto | ||||||
| 5 | Clemente Award; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, The Roberto Clemente Award is presented annually | ||||||
| 7 | to the Major League Baseball player who best represents the | ||||||
| 8 | game through "extraordinary character, community involvement, | ||||||
| 9 | philanthropy and positive contributions" on and off the field; | ||||||
| 10 | and
| ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, Anthony Rizzo is the third Cubs player to receive | ||||||
| 12 | the award, following Rick Sutcliffe in 1987 and Sammy Sosa in | ||||||
| 13 | 1998, and the first from Chicago since White Sox first baseman | ||||||
| 14 | Paul Konerko was a co-winner in 2014; and | ||||||
| 15 | WHEREAS, Anthony Rizzo is a five-time nominee for the | ||||||
| 16 | award; his Rizzo Family Foundation has raised $4 million over | ||||||
| 17 | the years helping families of cancer patients; he hosts several | ||||||
| 18 | fundraisers a year both in season and during the winter; and | ||||||
| 19 | WHEREAS, Anthony Rizzo survived cancer himself, having | ||||||
| 20 | been diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma while playing minor | ||||||
| 21 | league baseball in 2008; during his time in treatment, he made | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | a commitment with his mother to build an organization dedicated | ||||||
| 2 | to benefiting cancer research and the families fighting the | ||||||
| 3 | disease; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, Anthony Rizzo is involved with cancer centers at | ||||||
| 5 | the University of Miami Health System, the Joe DiMaggio | ||||||
| 6 | Children's Hospital in Hollywood, Florida, and Gilda's Club | ||||||
| 7 | Chicago; he frequently visits the children in the infusion | ||||||
| 8 | center at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, | ||||||
| 9 | where they receive chemotherapy; earlier this year, his | ||||||
| 10 | foundation made a $3.5 million endowment to Lurie Children's | ||||||
| 11 | Hospital; and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Anthony Rizzo was voted by the MLB players as the | ||||||
| 13 | recipient of the 2017 Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award; he | ||||||
| 14 | was nominated by his teammates and chosen from a final group of | ||||||
| 15 | six; the award is given to the player who most inspires others | ||||||
| 16 | to higher levels of achievement through his on-field | ||||||
| 17 | performance and contributions to his community; and | ||||||
| 18 | WHEREAS, During his early days with the Cubs, Anthony Rizzo | ||||||
| 19 | kept an autographed photo of Ernie Banks and him inside his | ||||||
| 20 | locker signed with the words "Dream big"; now his catchphrase | ||||||
| 21 | to the children and families he meets is "Stay strong and dream | ||||||
| 22 | big"; therefore, be it

| 1 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | ||||||
| 2 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 3 | congratulate Chicago Cubs' first baseman Anthony Rizzo on | ||||||
| 4 | winning the 2017 Roberto Clemente Award; and be it further
| ||||||
| 5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 6 | presented to Anthony Rizzo as a symbol of our respect and | ||||||
| 7 | esteem.
