| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 | | Representatives wish to recognize the 2017 celebration of India |
| 4 | | Independence Day in Oak Brook; and
|
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Independence Day is celebrated annually in India |
| 6 | | as a national holiday, commemorating the nation's independence |
| 7 | | from the United Kingdom in 1947; it is one of three national |
| 8 | | holidays in India along with Republic Day and Mahatma Gandhi's |
| 9 | | birthday; and
|
| 10 | | WHEREAS, India attained independence following the |
| 11 | | Independence Movement, noted for its largely nonviolent |
| 12 | | resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National |
| 13 | | Congress; and
|
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Today we honor the sacrifices made by many to |
| 15 | | achieve independence, and gather to celebrate the Indian |
| 16 | | culture and the Indian community; and
|
| 17 | | WHEREAS, The Indian diaspora celebrates Independence Day |
| 18 | | around the world, particularly in regions with high |
| 19 | | concentrations of Indian immigrants; therefore, be it
