| 1 | AMENDMENT TO HOUSE RESOLUTION 530

| 2 | AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend House Resolution 530 by replacing | ||||||
| 3 | everything after the heading with the following: | ||||||
| 4 | "WHEREAS, When the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in | ||||||
| 5 | Washington,
D.C. was finished in 1983, the wall listed more | ||||||
| 6 | than 58,000
servicemen and women who had either died in action | ||||||
| 7 | or went
missing during the Vietnam War; and | ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, Due to a fire at a government storage facility in
| ||||||
| 9 | 1973, the United States military lost millions of personnel
| ||||||
| 10 | records, including many of those who were listed on the wall;
| ||||||
| 11 | and | ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, The military and other organizations made efforts
| ||||||
| 13 | to recover the lost data; 24,000 veterans listed on the wall
| ||||||
| 14 | still had no picture in military records as of 2013; and | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | WHEREAS, In January of 2017, the Illinois Press Association
| ||||||
| 2 | Foundation joined the National Newspaper Association in
a | ||||||
| 3 | coordinated effort to recover the 579 missing Illinois
| ||||||
| 4 | veterans' photos; and | ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, Illinois newspapers have worked with their
| ||||||
| 6 | communities to locate 100 of the missing photos; 45 counties in | ||||||
| 7 | Illinois are home to the remaining 479 soldiers without photos;
| ||||||
| 8 | therefore, be it | ||||||
| 9 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
| ||||||
| 10 | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
| ||||||
| 11 | urge Illinois communities to become involved in the Vietnam
| ||||||
| 12 | Veterans Memorial Fund's "Wall of Faces" project to help
locate | ||||||
| 13 | pictures of soldiers whose photos were lost and to
further | ||||||
| 14 | preserve the legacy of those who sacrificed all in the
Vietnam | ||||||
| 15 | War."
