| 1 | | AN ACT concerning education.

| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 | | Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
| 5 | | 27-20.08 as follows: |
| 6 | | (105 ILCS 5/27-20.08 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 27-20.08. Media literacy. |
| 8 | | (a) In this Section, "media literacy" means the ability to |
| 9 | | access, analyze, evaluate, create, and communicate using a |
| 10 | | variety of forms, including, but not limited to, print, visual, |
| 11 | | audio, interactive, and digital texts. |
| 12 | | (b) Beginning with the 2018-2019 school year, every public |
| 13 | | high school may include in its curriculum a unit of instruction |
| 14 | | on media literacy. The unit of instruction shall include, but |
| 15 | | is not limited to, analyzing: |
| 16 | | (1) the purpose of media messages and how they are |
| 17 | | constructed; |
| 18 | | (2) explicit and implicit media messages; |
| 19 | | (3) values and points of view that are included and |
| 20 | | excluded in the media; |
| 21 | | (4) how the media may influence ideas and behaviors; |
| 22 | | and |
| 23 | | (5) the importance of obtaining information from |
